I built a 28-day countdown for international trip planning over 2 years of solo + family trips. This is the framework I use myself.
Days 28-22: Foundation
Verify passport 6+ months beyond return date. Many countries reject entry if passport expires within 6 months. Visa research at embassy website (e-visas need 3-15 business days).
Days 21-15: Bookings + Health
Book flights (most prices stabilize 21 days out for international). Book lodging. Schedule any vaccinations (Hepatitis A/B for Asia/Africa/Latin America, Yellow Fever for Sub-Saharan Africa, Typhoid for many regions).
Days 14-8: Itinerary
Plan specific activities for each travel day. 1 anchor + 1-2 hours unstructured + 1 weather backup.
Days 7-1: Final week
Test-pack into your luggage (4-day clothing cycle for 14-day trip). Charge electronics. International roaming OR local SIM/eSIM (Airalo, Holafly).
Day 0: Departure checklist
Passport, visa, vaccination cert, 2 forms of payment, cash in destination currency, phone fully charged, power bank charged, travel insurance card, emergency contacts (printed).
Country risk framework
Always check US State Department (travel.state.gov), UK FCDO, CDC. Enroll in STEP (step.state.gov) for embassy alerts.
